About the U.S. House of Representatives

Information on the House of Representatives

  • The House consists of 435 Members.
  • Members of the House are called “Congressman”, “Congresswoman”, or “Representative”.
  • Each Member of the House represents a single Congressional District.
  • Each state is subdivided geographically into Congressional Districts so that each District contains approximately 650,000 individuals.  (To view a map of each Congressional District, click here.)
  • For this reason, more populous states have more congressional districts; California has the most congressional districts with 53 while seven states (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming) have only one congressional district that encompasses the entire state.
  • Members of the House are elected by the citizens in their district to serve two-year terms – the entire House is up for reelection every November in even-numbered years.
  • If you do not know who your Representative is, you can find this information by going to the House website and typing in your ZIP Code in the appropriate place in the upper left-hand corner of the screen.
  • Sometimes, you are required to type in your ZIP Code + 4 digit suffix to identify your Member.  If you do not know your ZIP + 4, you can find it by going to the Postal Service ZIP Code Finder and typing in your address.
  • Once you identify your Representative, visit their website to learn about them and copy down their contact information (address and phone number of their Washington, D.C. office; address(es) and phone number(s) of their local office(s); and email address).
