About the U.S. Senate

Information on the U.S. Senate

  • The Senate consists of 100 Senators – two from each State.
  • Members of the Senate are called “Senator”.
  • Both Senators from a state represent the entire State, so everyone is represented by two Senators.
  • Senators are elected by the citizens of their state to serve six-year terms.
  • Senators terms are staggered so that one-third of the Senate is up for reelection every November in even-numbered years.
  • If you do not know who your Senators are, you can find this information by going to the Senate website.
  • Once you identify your Senators, visit their websites to learn about each of them and copy down their contact information (address and phone number of their Washington, D.C. office; address(es) and phone number(s) of their local office(s); and email address).
