Information About Attending Town Hall Meetings and Approaching Your Members of Congress

Members of Congress frequently hold public town hall meetings in their Congressional District or State to meet and interact with their constituents.  This provides an excellent opportunity to meet or revisit with your Members of Congress.

Contact the Member's District/State office by phone and ask for a schedule of the member’s town hall meetings.  If you can attend, ask a question during Q&A or approach the Member during Meet & Greet to discuss your family and SMA.

Here are some tips to remember when interacting with the Member:

  1. Be friendly and concise - it is okay to explain SMA and to tell your story, but remember to be respectful of the Member's time.
  2. Do not be afraid to request the Member's support for a specific legislative or policy item; it is okay to be direct, but always be polite.
  3. It is a good idea to interact with the Member's staff, too; it is their job to interact with and be responsive to the Member's constituents.
  4. Ask the Member's staff for their business card.
  5. Ask the Member or their staff for the name of the appropriate staff in the Washington, D.C. office so that you can contact them, too.  In most Congressional offices, the district/state staff handles constituent "casework" while the Washington, D.C. staff handles legislative responsibilities.
  6. Follow up with a thank you letter to the Member and his/her staff.
