Federal Appropriations / Funding for SMA Research
Background on Federal Funding for SMA Research

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a component of the Department of Health and Human Services, is a $29 billion Federal agency that has primary responsibility for funding much of the nation's basic medical research through grants to institutions of higher education and research facilities throughout the country. Currently, NIH funds just $11 million in SMA research annually.

Federal funding of SMA research must be increased if the NIH is to make a serious contribution to finding a cure for SMA. Families of SMA continues working with the SMA community to bring this message to the leadership of the NIH and the relevant Congressional committees responsible for providing overall funding and direction to NIH.
