NIH Launches Drug-Development Program for Rare Diseases The program comes with new money from Congress and is aimed at finding new treatments for some of the 6,800 rare diseases that collectively affect about 25 million Americans. Of those diseases only 200 have treatments, according to NIH. The program is starting with $24 million in funding this year with expectation of receiving the same amount each year until 2013.

New NIH Grant Opportunity in from of Recovery Act Limited Competition for NIH Grants: Research and Research Infrastructure “Grand Opportunities” (RC2) Under the Recovery Act, the NIH has established a new program entitled Research and Research Infrastructure “Grand Opportunities” hereafter called the ”GO” grants program.This new program will support projects that address large, specific biomedical and biobehavioral research endeavors that will benefit from significant 2-year funds without the expectation of continued NIH funding beyond two years. The research supported by the ”GO” grants program should have high short-term impact, and a high likelihood of enabling growth and investment in biomedical research and development, public health, and health care delivery. These are two year grants capped at $500,000 per year, and they are due on May 27th.

SMA Europe Call for Grant Applications SMA Europe (the European Federation of SMA patient associations) has just launched its call for projects aimed at funding international research for finding a cure to SMA (for a total amount of at least 600.000 euros). Researchers Support Letter for SMA Acceleration Act In order to continue to grow support for the bill, the Patient Advisory Group of the ICC, which includes Families of SMA, FightSMA, MDA, SMA Foundation, and other advocacy groups, has drafted a letter to the lead sponsors of the legislation in the House and the Senate outlining in scientific terms the arguments in favor of passing the bill as soon as possible. We ask that you lend your name to this letter in support of the bill.
